Merzouga vs Zagora vs Agafay

“Which desert should I visit?” is one of the questions we hear most often from travelers staying in Marrakech. Morocco offers three very different desert experiences within reach of the Red City: the stone desert of Agafay, the Zagora region in the Draa Valley, and the great dunes of Merzouga. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.

Quick comparison

  • Agafay: about 40 km from Marrakech (45 minutes). A rocky, lunar landscape with views of the Atlas. Half day or evening.
  • Zagora: about 360 km from Marrakech (around 7 hours). Palm groves, kasbahs and smaller sand dunes. 2 days minimum.
  • Merzouga: about 560 km from Marrakech (9 to 10 hours). The high golden dunes of Erg Chebbi, the real Sahara postcard. 3 days recommended.

Agafay: the desert next door

Agafay is not a sand desert but a vast plateau of stony hills. What makes it magical is the silence, the sunset light and the snow-capped High Atlas on the horizon. It is perfect if you have a short stay, travel with young children, or simply want a taste of desert life without a long drive. Our Agafay Desert Day Trip brings you to a desert camp to relax and enjoy the sunset.

Zagora: the Draa Valley and its dunes

The road to Zagora is one of the most scenic in Morocco: the Tichka pass, Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate and then the endless palm groves of the Draa Valley. The dunes around Zagora are modest compared with Merzouga, but you still enjoy a camel ride and a night in a desert camp. The 2 Day Trip from Marrakech to Zagora is the best option when you have only two days.

Merzouga: the dunes of Erg Chebbi

If you imagine orange dunes rolling to the horizon, you imagine Merzouga. The Erg Chebbi dunes rise up to around 150 m and change color from gold to red at sunset and sunrise. The trip is longer, but the road itself is part of the adventure, with the Dades and Todra Gorges on the way. We recommend the 3 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga, or a one-way tour from Fes to Marrakech via Merzouga.

So, which one should you choose?

  • 1 day or less: Agafay.
  • 2 days: Zagora.
  • 3 days or more: Merzouga, without hesitation.
  • Arriving in Fes or Tangier: Merzouga is closer to Fes than to Marrakech, so start your desert tour from Fes.

What about Erg Chigaga?

Beyond Zagora, near the village of M’Hamid, lie the remote dunes of Erg Chigaga, reachable only by 4×4 across a dry lake. They are wilder and less visited than Erg Chebbi, but the journey is longer and the trip needs more days. If you dream of this kind of adventure, contact us and we will tell you what is possible for your dates.

The camel ride and the camp: what changes?

In Merzouga, the camel caravan crosses real high dunes, and the camps are hidden among them. In Zagora, the ride is shorter and the dunes lower, but the atmosphere of the camp, the dinner and the stars are just as memorable. In Agafay there are no camel treks across dunes, but the camps offer a comfortable desert evening with a view of the Atlas. Whatever you choose, take time to sit in silence and watch the light change: that is what the desert is about.
