Best Day Trips from Marrakech

Marrakech is fascinating, but after a few days in the medina many travelers want fresh air, mountains or the ocean. The good news is that some of Morocco’s most beautiful places are less than three hours away. Here are the five best day trips from Marrakech, with driving times and tips from our local team.

1. Agafay Desert (45 minutes)

The closest “desert” to Marrakech is a stony plateau with a lunar look and the High Atlas as a backdrop. Come in the afternoon, relax at a desert camp and stay for the sunset. See the Agafay Desert Day Trip.

2. Ourika Valley and Setti Fatma (about 1h15)

A green valley in the High Atlas, with Berber villages, terraced fields and a river lined with small restaurants. At Setti Fatma, a short hike leads to a series of waterfalls. Along the way you visit an argan oil cooperative and a traditional Berber house. It is the perfect escape from the summer heat. See the Ourika Valley Day Trip.

3. Ouzoud Waterfalls (about 2.5 to 3 hours)

The highest waterfalls in Morocco plunge around 110 m into a red gorge surrounded by olive trees. Walk down to the bottom, take a boat ride under the spray and meet the wild Barbary macaques that live around the falls. See the Ouzoud Waterfalls Day Trip and read our complete Ouzoud guide.

4. Essaouira (about 2.5 to 3 hours)

A relaxed fishing port on the Atlantic coast with a UNESCO-listed medina, blue-and-white houses, ramparts facing the ocean and some of the best fresh fish in Morocco. On the way, stop at an argan cooperative and look out for goats climbing argan trees. See the Essaouira Day Trip.

5. Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate (about 3.5 to 4 hours)

Cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass to the famous earthen ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and filming location of many movies, then continue to Ouarzazate. It is a long but spectacular day. See the Ouarzazate & Ait Ben Haddou Day Trip.

Tips for your day trips from Marrakech

  • Start early: departures are usually in the morning to enjoy the cooler hours and avoid the crowds.
  • Dress in layers: the Atlas Mountains can be cool even when Marrakech is hot, and Essaouira is often windy.
  • Carry cash: lunch, small purchases and tips are paid in dirhams.
  • Plan your week: alternate a day in the medina with a day outside the city so you do not get tired of either.

From a day trip to a desert adventure

If one of these excursions gives you a taste for more, consider a multi-day trip. The Ouarzazate day trip covers the first part of the road to the Sahara, and our 2-day Zagora trip and 3-day Merzouga tour continue to the dunes for a night under the stars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which day trip from Marrakech is the best?

It depends on your interests: Ouzoud for nature, Essaouira for the coast, Ait Ben Haddou for history and Agafay for a quick desert experience.

Do day trips include hotel pick-up?

Yes, all our excursions include pick-up and drop-off at your hotel or riad in Marrakech.

Can I visit the Sahara on a day trip from Marrakech?

Not the sand dunes of Merzouga, which are too far. For a desert feeling in one day, choose Agafay; for real dunes, book at least a 2-day tour.
