Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate Day Trip from Marrakech

The fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou is one of the most photographed places in Morocco. Built of earth and straw on a hill above the Ounila river, it has served as a backdrop for dozens of films and series. You can visit it in a long day trip from Marrakech, combined with Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert.

The road over the Tizi n’Tichka

The journey is half the experience. The road climbs into the High Atlas to the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m, with breathtaking viewpoints, Berber villages and argan and walnut trees in the valleys. Expect about 3.5 to 4 hours each way with photo stops.

Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Listed by UNESCO in 1987, the ksar is a perfect example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture, with kasbahs, granaries and narrow passages climbing to an old granary at the top. With a local guide you learn how families lived here and how the village is preserved today. The view from the summit over the desert plains is spectacular.

A star of the big screen

Ait Ben Haddou and the surroundings of Ouarzazate appear in famous productions such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator and Game of Thrones. In Ouarzazate, film studios open their sets to visitors.

Practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes to climb to the top of the ksar.
  • Bring a warm layer: the pass can be cold, even when Marrakech is warm.
  • In summer, protect yourself from the midday sun with a hat and water.
  • If you want more time, add a night in the desert with our 2-day Zagora trip or the 3-day Merzouga tour, which both stop at Ait Ben Haddou.

Visit Ait Ben Haddou with hotel pick-up and a local guide in the kasbah.

A village on the caravan route

For centuries, caravans traveling between the Sahara and Marrakech passed through the Ounila valley, and Ait Ben Haddou grew as a stop on this route. Today, most families live in the newer village on the other side of the river, while a few still live inside the old ksar and welcome visitors in their homes and shops. Restoration work keeps the earthen walls standing after the rains.

A typical day

  • Midday: guided visit of Ait Ben Haddou and lunch.
  • Afternoon: Ouarzazate, then the drive back across the High Atlas to Marrakech in the evening.
