Best Time to Visit the Sahara Desert in Morocco (Month by Month)

The Moroccan Sahara can be visited all year round, but the experience changes a lot with the seasons. Here is what to expect month by month, so you can choose the best time for your desert tour.

Spring (March to May): the favorite season

Warm, sunny days and pleasant nights make spring the most popular time for a desert tour. The Atlas is still capped with snow and the valleys are green. Some days can be windy, which lifts the sand, but the light is beautiful for photos.

Summer (June to August): hot days, magical nights

Daytime temperatures in Merzouga regularly exceed 40°C. Tours adapt: you drive during the day in an air-conditioned vehicle, ride camels in the late afternoon and enjoy warm nights under a sky full of stars. Drink a lot of water and protect yourself from the sun.

Autumn (September to November): perfect conditions

From mid-September the heat drops and the desert enjoys warm days and comfortable nights. It is also date harvest season in the palm groves of the Ziz and Draa valleys. October and November are among the best months of the year.

Winter (December to February): sunny and crisp

Days are often sunny and mild, perfect for exploring, but nights in the desert can drop to around 0°C. Camps provide thick blankets, and with good warm clothes the starry winter nights are unforgettable. Snow can occasionally close the Tichka pass for a few hours.

Which tour for which season?

In summer, the shorter 2-day Zagora trip or a day in Agafay are good options. In spring and autumn, take your time with the 3-day Merzouga tour or the Fes to Marrakech desert tour. Do not forget to check our desert packing list.

Marrakech vs the desert: the weather is not the same

Many travelers are surprised by the difference between cities and desert. Marrakech can be pleasant while the desert is hot during the day, and the mountain passes can be cold even in spring. On a multi-day tour you will cross several climates in one trip, so pack layers whatever the month.

Ramadan and public holidays

Tours run normally during Ramadan. Some small restaurants may close during the day, but tourist services, hotels and camps keep serving visitors. Around major holidays and European school vacations, demand is higher, so book your desert tour a few weeks in advance.
