A Night in a Merzouga Desert Camp

For many travelers, the night in the desert is the most memorable moment of their trip to Morocco. But what exactly happens? Here is a realistic description of a night in a desert camp in the Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga.

Late afternoon: the camel ride

You arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon, leave your main luggage and take a small bag. Then your camel caravan sets off into the dunes, led by a local guide. The light turns gold, then orange, and the silence of the desert takes over. Stop on a dune to watch the sunset before reaching the camp.

Standard or luxury camp?

Our desert tours offer two categories. Standard camps have traditional Berber tents with comfortable beds and shared facilities. Luxury camps offer more spacious tents with more comfort and private facilities. Both give you the same magic: the dunes, the stars and the hospitality. Ask us for photos when you book.

Evening: dinner, music and stars

Dinner is served in the camp, usually a soup, a tagine and fruit, with mint tea of course. After dinner, gather around the fire for Berber drumming and songs. Then step away from the lights: with no city nearby, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on clear nights.

Sunrise over Erg Chebbi

Set your alarm before dawn and climb the nearest dune. Watching the sun rise over the Sahara and light up the dunes is unforgettable. After breakfast, you ride or drive back to Merzouga to continue your journey.

Which tours include a desert camp night?

All our Sahara tours include it: from Marrakech (2 days, 3 days, 7 days), from Fes, from Casablanca and from Tangier.

Beyond the camel ride

If your itinerary includes a full day in Merzouga, you can explore the area by 4×4, visit the Gnawa musicians of Khamlia, try sandboarding on the high dunes, see the fossils of Erfoud or the market of Rissani, and meet nomad families who live around the dunes. The desert is not empty: it is full of life and stories.

Respecting the desert

Take your rubbish back with you, ask before photographing people and follow your guide’s advice on the dunes. Small gestures help keep Erg Chebbi beautiful for the communities who live there and for future travelers.
