Sleeping under the stars in the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi is the dream of almost every traveler who comes to Morocco. The village of Merzouga is the gateway to these dunes, and Marrakech is where most trips begin. The only question is how many days to give it. In this guide we compare the 2-day, 3-day and 7-day options so you can pick the right Marrakech to Merzouga desert tour for your trip.
How far is Merzouga from Marrakech?
Merzouga lies about 560 km south-east of Marrakech, on the edge of the Sahara near the Algerian border. The road crosses the High Atlas over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), then follows the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” through Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Tinghir. Without stops the drive takes about 9 to 10 hours, so the way you split it makes a big difference.
The highlights on the way
- Tizi n’Tichka pass: hairpin bends and Berber villages clinging to the mountains.
- Ait Ben Haddou: a UNESCO-listed fortified village made of earth, used in films such as Gladiator and the series Game of Thrones.
- Ouarzazate: the “gateway to the desert” and home of Morocco’s film studios.
- Skoura and the Valley of Roses: palm groves, kasbahs and rose gardens around Kalaat M’Gouna.
- Dades and Todra Gorges: red canyons, the famous Dades switchback road and the towering walls of the Todra Gorge.
- Erg Chebbi: sand dunes rising up to around 150 m, where the camel ride and the desert camp await you.
Option 1: the 2-day trip from Marrakech to Merzouga
The 2 Day Trip from Marrakech to Merzouga is designed for travelers who have very little time. You leave Marrakech early, cross the High Atlas and arrive in Merzouga for a sunset camel ride and a night in a desert camp, then drive back the next day through the Draa Valley. It works, but expect two long days on the road. If you only have two days, the 2 Day Trip from Marrakech to Zagora is closer and more relaxed, with smaller dunes.
Option 2: the classic 3-day desert tour (our recommendation)
The 3 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga is the most popular choice and the best balance between time and experience. The first day takes you over the Tichka pass to Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, with a night in the Dades Gorges. On day two you visit the Todra Gorge and reach Merzouga in time for a camel trek at sunset, dinner around the fire and a night in the desert camp. On day three you watch the sunrise over the dunes and return to Marrakech.

Option 3: 7 days through the Atlas and the Sahara
If you prefer to travel slowly, the 7 Day Desert Tour from Marrakech takes a different road through Imilchil and the Ziz Valley, gives you a full day around Merzouga, and returns via Tinghir, the Todra and Dades Gorges and Ouarzazate. It ends with a day to visit Marrakech. It is ideal for photographers, families and anyone who wants to meet local people rather than just drive past.
What is a night in a Merzouga desert camp like?
Camps are set among the dunes, usually reached by camel in the late afternoon. You can choose a standard camp with traditional Berber tents or a luxury camp with more comfort and private facilities. Evenings include a Moroccan dinner, Berber music around the fire and a sky full of stars, far from any city lights. Wake up early: sunrise over Erg Chebbi is one of the most beautiful moments of the whole trip.
Best time to go
The most comfortable months are March to May and mid-September to November. In summer, temperatures in Merzouga often exceed 40°C, so activities are scheduled early in the morning and late in the afternoon. In winter, days are sunny and pleasant but nights in the desert can approach 0°C, so pack warm layers. Read our full guide to the best time to visit the Sahara.
Things to do around Merzouga
The camel ride is the star of the show, but the area around Erg Chebbi has much more to offer if you have a little time:
- Khamlia, a village whose families keep alive the Gnawa music brought by people from sub-Saharan Africa.
- Rissani, an old caravan town with a lively traditional market and the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif.
- Erfoud, known worldwide for its fossils, with workshops where you can see how the stones are cut and polished.
- Sandboarding on the high dunes, a favorite with teenagers.
- Nomad families living around the dunes, who sometimes welcome visitors for tea.
How to choose the right tour for you
Ask yourself three questions: how many days do you have, where do you want to finish, and how do you feel about long drives? If you have two days, go to Zagora. If you have three, Merzouga is a must. If you are traveling on to Fes, a one-way tour saves you the drive back. And if you want to travel slowly and meet people along the way, take the 7-day route. In every case, tell us your dates and we will confirm availability and adapt the itinerary.
